I Love bug.sex

I really love bug.sex, I’m serious. Bug.sex has always had a bit of mystique to it. Sporadic drops, mixed with faint communication to its audience, give the NYC-based brand a mystery that its community can’t get enough of. Bug.sex has found this perfect formula that has created its own universe filled with custom-made action figures, Metal Gear Solid-style mechs, breakcore, and, of course, insects.

The first post on bug.sex’s Instagram introduces the brand like a video game. A mysterious admin enters the password to the main menu. There, the player is taken to a cutscene of a military helicopter flying through the air, followed by a pan shot leading to the main menu. Then, the admin presses start, and you are now thrust into the world of bug.sex.

Every single item they have released has sold out. Due to their limited and sporadic drops, each item feels like a badge of honor or a coveted token. The shirts are fun, minimalistic, and almost always show a bug-eyed creature or mechanical creation at the center of the tee.

Alongside these tees are action figures, keychains, and now a second self-produced mixtape titled ‘Bugbreaks vol.2’. They make promotional vids that feel like a video game, adorned in fast breakbeats.

The brand echoes PS2-era classics like Monkey Ball and Metal Gear Solid. Hints of Happy.99 and Stray Rats. Bug.sex succeeded in something that is not easy: world-building a brand. It’s like bug.sex has taken bits from our world like music, clothing, and video games, and molded them as an extension of its identity. Almost as if being from another dimension, they grabbed what they enjoyed, adopted it as their own, and got to creating. What’s left is a glitchy, cheeky, mysterious band of insects and robots.

Bug.sex’s team has decided to stay anonymous throughout the brand’s entirety, which adds to its mythos. It allows the brand to exist without a visible creator. How they’ve managed to create a dense ecosystem while remaining anonymous is amazing. To have no home, or creator, lets that creation live in its own universe, one without ties to our world. All we have to grasp is what comes out of that ecosystem, like a plushie or keychain.

Every person who buys bug.sex isn’t just a fan of clothing, but a fan of the world they’ve created, which, in turn, gives it this extra level of investment. It feels like it’s merch for the world it’s created.
